RESIDENTS have spoken of their shock after a bus ploughed into a bungalow in Hessle.

Three people suffered minor injuries, with one person being taken to hospital, after the East Yorkshire Motor Services bus crashed into the property in Northgate, just after 8am yesterday.

The owner of the bungalow was not in the house at the time.

John Starkey, who lives opposite the crash scene, described his shock at what happened.

"I heard a loud bang, but as it was bin day, I put it down to the dustbin cart – then I heard a lot of sirens," he said. "My wife looked outside and said a bus had crashed into the bungalow opposite.

"Luckily, the guy who owns the bungalow wasn't in at the time.

"It's a big shock. You don't expect things like this to happen at all."

Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed nine people, including the bus driver, were assessed by paramedics and three suffered minor injuries.

One person was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Emergency services, including the police and fire service, attended the scene.

PC Simon Carlisle, casualty reduction officer for Humberside Police, said: "We received reports this morning that a bus had crashed into a bungalow in Hessle.

"Luckily, the owner of the property was not at home at the time.

"We are currently waiting for the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency to carry out an internal investigation to determine what was the cause of the accident."

Witnesses suggested the EYMS bus had swerved around a bin lorry before demolishing a garden wall and hitting the house. This has not been confirmed and the cause of the crash is still being investigated.

Sarah Fisher, 18, was a passenger on the bus.

She said: "Because the garden was on a slope, the bus just seemed to go faster and then crashed into the front of the bungalow.

"Luckily, everybody seemed to be okay. I don't think I'll be getting a bus ever again.

"Everybody was just in shock.

"It was really scary."

Mr Starkey said Northgate is one of the busiest roads in Hessle.

He said: "We get lorries doing deliveries to the shops and buses passing regularly.

"It could have been a lot worse – someone could have been killed.

"This is a very busy and dangerous road, which I don't think people appreciate."

Northgate remained closed for a number of hours while the bus was recovered from the scene and the bungalow was made safe.

Bob Rackley, commercial manager for EYMS, said: "We will be carrying out an internal investigation to establish what happened.

"This will involve investigating the CCTV on board, speaking to the driver, looking at the telematics of the bus and, of course, investigating the bus itself."
