A scam message claiming to be from Humberside Police tells web users they must pay a £100 fine because they have been viewing adult content online.
Police issued a warning about the message today after being contacted by a concerned member of the public.
The pop-up messages tell users their computer has been locked by police and demands they pay a £100 fine.
The con has been reported by users in several parts of Britain. Some messages claim to come from a local force, while others are labelled "Scotland Yard".
Now, Humberside Police is warning people not to fall for the con or follow any of the instructions in the message.
A spokesman said: "The caller was using the internet when a pop-up message appeared on their computer claiming to be from Humberside Police. The message suggested that the user had done something wrong and needed to pay the force £100 to remove the message.
"This is not a message from Humberside Police and people are urged not to follow the instructions on screen or send any money."
