Five things Hull City must do to stand a chance against Arsenal

Hull City face a tough test against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday. Brad Rial picks out five things the Tigers must do to compete with the Gunners.

1) Exploit the right-back area

Man of the moment Andy Robertson will be looking to continue his excellent start to the season at The Emirates on Saturday. And with Arsenal missing their two first-choice right-backs, there should be ample opportunity for the 20-year-old to impress again.

With Mathieu Debuchy injured and Calum Chambers suspended, youngster Hector Bellerin is expected to deputise. The 19-year-old Spaniard has started just two games for the Gunners – both of which ended in defeat – and is so far yet to feature in the Premier League.

Robertson has already shown this season that he can mix it with the very best and hasn't looked at all out of place in the top flight.

He has shown no sign of nerves and will relish the opportunity to impress on the big stage.

The Scotland star will no doubt be tested defensively by the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Santi Cazorla, but it is in the Gunners' half where he will be looking to make an impact. Against the inexperienced Bellerin, the onus will be on him to attack and put the Arsenal defence on the back foot.

2) Catch them cold

Arsenal have been slow starters in games this season, so if City are to bring anything home from the Emirates, they need to be on their mettle from the first whistle.

Although the Gunners have lost only once in the league so far, they have conceded the first goal in five of their seven games. What's more, two thirds of the goals (six out of nine) they have conceded have come in the first half.

What City wouldn't give for a repeat of their stunning start to the FA Cup final back in May, when they were two goals to the good after eight minutes.

3) Let the Gunners have the ball

It has often been suggested that Arsene Wenger's side keep possession for keeping possession's sake. How many times have you heard people say, "they try to walk the ball into the net"?

In the defeat at Chelsea, Arsenal had 53 per cent of the ball but failed to muster a single shot on target. Mourinho's men were happy for the Gunners to have the ball because they felt comfortable they could repel anything thrown at them.

Chelsea, on the other hand, were ruthless when they had the ball. They had half as many shots, but were clinical when the chances presented themselves.

Although City aren't in Chelsea's class, they lessons are there to be learnt. If they can catch Arsenal off guard early on, as Palace, Everton, Man City and Chelsea have done, they will then have a chance to frustrate and contain their hosts.

4) Get crosses into the box

Of City's 11 league goals this campaign, six have come from crosses into the box – a simple but effective tactic, and one that could pay dividends against an Arsenal side susceptible to crosses.

The Gunners have conceded four headed goals this season – three from set-pieces. It is a fundamental flaw in their game and something that City will again look to exploit.

Both their goals in the FA Cup final came through crosses into the box as the Gunners struggled to organise their defence. Had Kieran Gibbs not cleared Alex Bruce's header off the line, City would've added a third and found themselves with a surely unassailable lead.

With little sign Arsenal have healed their Achilles heel, Ahmed Elmohamady and Andy Robertson will be charged with getting the ball into the box as often as they can.

5) Take heart from class of 2008

Mention The Emirates to any Hull City fan and the game that will immediately spring to mind is the 2-1 win in 2008. Goals from Geovanni and Daniel Cousin handed Phil Brown's men a famous victory and it remains City's finest day in the top flight.

Although Arsenal's home record remains impressive, the Emirates is not the fortress it was six years ago and while the Gunners will be firm favourites, a City side eager for cup final revenge may just be able to spring a surprise.
