Ebola: Hospitals review procedures after WHO warning

Hull and East Riding hospital bosses have reviewed procedures to deal with an Ebola outbreak in the wake of a warning by the World Health Organisation. The deadly virus has already claimed the lives of around 4,500 people, with almost all of the fatalities in west Africa, but all countries are being urged to assess their readiness to treat any potential outbreaks after the WHO predicted 10,000 new cases a week within two months. In Hull, staff at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital in Cottingham have reviewed their "viral haemorrhagic fever" protocol. Checks have been made to ensure both hospitals have all the necessary equipment, such as masks and protective suits, to allow nursing staff and medics to treat any patients suspected of having Ebola. Staff will be given refresher training on how to use the specialist equipment. However, in the unlikely event of doctors treating any suspected cases of Ebola in East Yorkshire, the patients would most likely be transferred to London for specialist treatment. Meanwhile, the University of Hull said it was monitoring the situation "carefully" and giving health advice to all international students. However, a spokeswoman stressed the risk of Ebola in the UK remained very low. She said: "Although the risk posed by Ebola in the UK remains very low, the University of Hull is monitoring the situation carefully and will continue to take advice from Universities UK and Public Health England. "All international students at the University of Hull will be given health advice during their induction - told where to seek help if they are unwell and how to register with a doctor. The University of Hull does not have any staff or students travelling from Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea. "All departmental staff across both the Hull and Scarborough Campuses have been informed of the actions to take should they come across a student who is unwell." Last week, the Mail reported how Hull firms Arco and Microgard are shipping 100,000 protective suits to Sierra Leone to help in the fight against Ebola.
