Hull Stingrays' Bobby McEwan: I have faith in my coach and team

Hull Stingrays' owner Bobby McEwan insists he will not be making any knee-jerk decisions in light of his team's poor start to the season.

Following the summer revamp, which saw Omar Pacha installed as coach and a host of new players arrive, Stingrays have won just twice in their first 11 games.

McEwan's men have not been blown away by any opponent, but have consistently failed to find a killer edge to close games out.

However, McEwan is adamant he will back both his coach and players to the hilt.

He said: "I've the utmost faith in Omar.

"He's passionate, knows the game and understands it and has a desire to win.

"I also have faith in the team because we have been hit with injuries all at one time.

"Once they are out of the way, and we have players in the correct positions, we'll be fine.

"We've not been blown out in any game and that's down to the players."

McEwan, though, admits there is work to do to turn potential into points.

Of particular concern is the club's home record, which stands at six defeats out of six matches. Penalty killing and powerplays are also problem areas.

"I'm not happy with some of the results but I see the potential the team has," said McEwan.

"At this stage, results are on a par with other years for Stingrays. I'd have hoped for better at home, but we have been playing some of the top teams like Sheffield and Belfast. When you make as many changes as we did you do have a settling in period and with the injuries we've got that will take time as well."

McEwan's faith is likely to be sorely tested if results do not improve, starting with this weekend's home double bill against Edinburgh on Saturday and Nottingham on Sunday.

Questioned regarding the timeframe for his squad to deliver, he said: "We've got to get it right and get it right as quickly as possible, in fact, the quicker the better. We've been working on the things we need to improve."

While not ruling out team changest, there appears no rush to axe under-achievers or bolster the injury-hit squad with "spare" import defenceman Pavel Gomeniuk.

The Hull-based veteran Ukrainian iced earlier in the season as cover, but has not been included for the last few weeks.

Instead, the Rapid Solicitors Stingrays will soldier on, but McEwan appreciates fans will have their concerns.

"I want to see everyone healthy and fit and give everyone a chance and let the team settle down," said McEwan, who would not comment on Gomeniuk's absence.

"Finding a player and going through the visa process can take four weeks and by then, hopefully, players will be back and healthy.

"I have belief in the team that when we at full strength we can compete with anyone.

"If we pick up long-term injuries like we have it's a killer. We can't afford to have guys like our player-coach or Zach Hervato out as they are guys who bring a lot to the table. But that's hockey, it's part of the game, you have to accept that."
