A DANCER and percussionist from the band Happy Mondays has praised anti-fracking protesters who have been camped near Walkington for several month. Celebrity Big Brother winner Bez has become a vociferous campaigner against fracking with his newly formed political group The Reality Party. He visited the Crawberry Hill site, near Walkington, to speak to campaigners. Rathlin Energy insist they are not fracking at the site and have no intentions to frack, however campaigners claim the tests which are being carried out are mini-fracks and question how the site will be used in the future. Bez said: "I'm standing up and defending the land and making awareness about fracking. "We've got to stop this insane technology what's been proven to be unsafe, which is unleashed on our land and our people. It's been done without consultation. "They're (the campaigners) doing a brilliant job. These people giving time and energy to protect the environment and planet. These people should be thanked." Campaigners suffered a setback when Rathlin was given the go-ahead by East Riding Council earlier this month to continue its oil and gas drilling operations at the site.
Bez first became involved in the anti-fracking campaign at the Barton Moss drill site in Salford, which is where he is standing for election alongside fellow candidate Jackie Anderson. Their direct involvement in the protest camp and other camps since has now evolved into helping out with the national campaign. He also visited the drilling site at West Newton, near Hull, which is also run by Rathlin.
