A MAN who becomes "Jekyll and Hyde" when he drinks carried out such a vicious attack on his partner that she soiled herself in fear.

Glyn Harrison, 40, had been sentenced to a community order for attacking the same woman just nine days before the unprovoked assault in their flat in Coltman Street, west Hull, on June 28.

She does not want a restraining order made against him and believes they may have a future, Hull Crown Court heard.

The couple had spent the afternoon drinking together in Hull city centre before returning home.

Harrison went to bed while his partner, Jacqueline Richards, laid on the sofa watching TV.

Just after 10pm, Harrison got up, disturbed by the TV, and threw a ball of silver foil at Miss Richards's head, which "hurt her a great deal", Phillip Evans, prosecuting, said.

Harrison grabbed her by the hair with his left hand and began dragging her while punching her with his right.

Mr Evans said: "Miss Richards says each punch was agony.

"She was unable to free herself, so tight was the defendant's grip, and indeed, she spontaneously defecated, such was the fear she experienced.

"Mr Harrison found the occasion one to make fun of."

Harrison told her what he was doing "was the complainant's fault", Mr Evans said.

Miss Richards went to the bathroom and saw that her nose was bleeding.

Harrison resumed the attack in the hall and, in her words, "started going crazy".

Miss Richards, who was on the floor, put her hands above her head and face in an effort to protect herself, but the blows continued.

Ignoring her screams, Harrison then delivered a "massive punch", at which there was a sound of a "crack" and blood began pouring from her mouth.

He had knocked a tooth out of her lower jaw, including its root, which cost her £66 to repair.

Miss Richards was eventually able to flee to a neighbouring property and called police.

She had previously called police five times during the year of their relationship.

After an earlier assault, when Harrison punched her in the face, she carried a knife "for her own protection" to a petrol station to report the incident, and was later sentenced to a community order for possessing it.

In a victim impact statement, Miss Richards described the most recent incident as "humiliating" and "degrading".

But Joanna Golding, for Harrison, said he had "received communication from the complainant to suggest that there's hope and prospects for the pair of them".

Recorder Eric Elliott QC called the attack "vicious" and said it "must have been terrifying" for Miss Richards.

Sentencing Harrison to 15 months in prison, he told him: "Normally you are a hard-working and, when sober, decent man, but you open a bottle and you are transformed and become a Jekyll and Hyde character."
