Job losses have been announced at BAE Systems site in Brough.
The military defence giant revealed today it will cut 440 managerial positions at sites across the UK.
It is expected the move will result in 16 redundancies at the East Riding site and a further 22 job losses at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
The change is part of a wider restructure of senior staff in BAE's Military Air & Information (MAI) business.
The company said it hoped the cost-saving move would improve efficiency and help sustain the long-term future of the Brough site.
Chris Boardman, managing director of BAE Systems MAI, said: "This is a very difficult day and I recognise that we have put a lot of people into uncertainty.
"In the future much of the company's business will come from export and the export market is very competitive.
"In order to help BAE compete in these markets we have to be more efficient and reduce costs and that's the reason we are making this announcement today.
"All of the jobs that are being lost are in management level positions and after looking very carefully at the company we concluded that we had too many levels of management in this part of the business, and too few people working for these managers.
"Brough remains an important site for BAE and the people at the Brough site do a really good job.
"We are working very hard and we are doing all we can to make sure it remains a key location.
"Where possible BAE try to give people the opportunity move to other areas of the company and there are some divisions where we are actively recruiting."
Mr Boardman said the changes will make the business more efficient.
He said: "We have a strong order book with Hawk, Typhoon and F-35 (planes) in production across our business and this, aligned with our extensive and growing in-service support work with the Royal Air Force and our overseas customers, provides a strong foundation for a long-term sustainable business.
"We understand that this is a time of uncertainty for our employees and we are committed to working with them and their representatives to explore ways of avoiding and mitigating potential job losses."
