When you've got players with the energy and crossing ability of Andy Robertson and Ahmed Elmohamady, it almost seems crazy not to play them as wing-backs.
And the switch back to a 3-5-2 shape against Crystal Palace definitely brought out their best in the 2-0 victory.
Elmohamady keeps on getting better and better during his time at the KC, as was shown against the Eagles with his non-stop running up and down the right flank.
But unlike in the past when he could not always be relied upon to deliver a great final ball, he now has that in his locker on a regular basis.
With Robertson doing exactly the same down the left side, City now have two of the most natural wing-backs there are in the Premier League.
Against the Eagles, they were allowed to dominate because they had time and space on the ball. But their more advanced position in what was effectively a five-man midfield also let them pick up the ball in better attacking areas.
Unlike when they are employed a bit deeper as full-backs in a 4-4-2, the duo had the comfort of knowing that City's three-man backline would be ready to mop up any danger should they get caught in possession.
Subconsciously, that makes it far easier to get on the attack as you are not worried about opponents getting in behind and exposing you.
With Robertson always looking at ease on the attack, the area he needs to work on is his defensive duties. But if he can find the right balance, City have signed some player for just under £3m.
The 20-year-old will link-up with Scotland this week on a high after playing a big part in a vital win.
If he can add a few goals to his game, which doesn't look too far around the corner, the former Dundee United man will be closely watched by rivals for the rest of the campaign.
The same goes for Elmohamady, who is enjoying a great start to the season and proving his £2m fee was a real snip a couple of years ago.
