A DAY of cycling will take place in Beverley to raise money for war veterans.

Les Barratt, 62, has organised three bike rides, which will take place on Sunday, October 5, to raise funds for Help For Heroes.

The charity is close to Mr Barratt's heart after his son, Major Jon Barratt, a doctor in the Army, completed his tour of duty in Afghanistan.

Mr Barratt, of Beverley, said: "It was my son who first inspired me to get involved with Help For Heroes.

"We held our first cycle event last year and about 200 people took part, which was fantastic.

"The weather, however, was horrendous, so this year we have got our fingers crossed for some sun."

Mr Barratt is hoping to beat last year's fundraising target of £4,000.

Places are still available for the Big G Reunion Help For Heroes sportive bike rides, which will start at 8am from Longcroft School in Burton Road.

Mr Barratt said: "The bike rides will take place on the wonderful roads of the Yorkshire Wolds.

"Routes will be fully paint- marked and they have been chosen to take riders through some of the best roads in this relatively undiscovered part of Yorkshire, which features stunning views of the surrounding valleys and vales.

"On a clear day, both the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors are visible from the numerous high points on the route."

There will be a choice of three distances – 100km, 60km and the Mini G at 30km, which is designed for novice cyclists who want to take part in the event but do not feel ready to take on the challenge of the longer routes.

Entry costs £20 for the 60km and 100km routes and £10 for the 30km distance.

A hot meal and drink will be provided at the end of the bike rides at Longcroft School and, for those riding the longer distances of 60km and 100km, a feed station, offering food and drinks, will be available en route.

All surplus funds will be donated directly to Help For Heroes.

Anyone who wants to take part in the cycle rides must enter before the event.

Mr Barratt said: "We hope to see as many people as possible taking part, having fun and raising as much money as possible."
