CONCERNED parents are calling for more safety measures on the Humber Bridge following the death of 14-year-old William Shaw.

The Malet Lambert pupil was found in a field near Hessle Foreshore at about 9pm on Wednesday, September 17.

William, who had earlier been seen on the bridge, was rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

His friends and pupils at the east Hull school have been left struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

One parent, who wishes to be known only as Jo, has now set up a group calling for increased safety measures on the Humber Bridge.

Jo said: "My daughter goes to Malet Lambert and when I heard about what happened I couldn't believe it.

"I was devastated at the thought of a young boy dying in that way and I just felt I had to do something to help."

The group has attracted more than 5,000 followers on Facebook, who are demanding action to prevent further fatalities.

Jo said: "The amount of messages I have received and the amount of people who have contacted me saying they want more safety measures for the bridge just goes to show it's something parents think is important.

"This issue has come up a few times over the years.

"We're talking about saving lives – making the bridge safer won't bring Will back now but it could stop it from happening again.

"How many more people have to die before we get something done?

"The fact is, we don't know how Will fell from the bridge but if safety measures had been there that night he would still be alive today."

The Humber Bridge Board was unavailable to comment on the calls for increased safety measures.

Friends of William are now focusing on the best way to remember the keen athlete.

William was passionate about running so his friends and fellow Malet Lambert pupils have arranged to meet in East Park this Saturday to complete the 5k Park Run.

The youngsters will also release helium balloons with messages of love and respect for their friend.

Organiser Jack Bullement, 14, was friends with William for years.

He said: "Organising the run is something for me to focus on and keep my mind off things.

"Over 600 people have said they are attending, so I hope we do Will proud."

Jack's mum Katie Bullement, 34, encouraged her son to find some- thing positive to do to help him and his friends cope with their grief.

"It's lovely that everyone is taking part in the run and the most important thing is that Will's friends, this group of children who are grieving, have something positive to focus on in these first few weeks," she said.

"I'm massively proud of him, but also everyone at the school, of how they are coping with it.

"Considering they are only 14, how they have been dealing with it and supporting each other is brilliant."

Malet Lambert headteacher Jane Disbrey has given her support to the pupils. She said: "We are very proud of the children and what they are doing to remember William."

'Heaven has gained an extra angel today'

JACK Bullement paid tribute to his friend William Shaw in an online video.

He said: "Today I lost one of the bravest kids I know.

"Will was an extremely talented young adult. He was smart, sporty, funny, just an all-round great kid to be around.

"All my respect goes to Will's family and friends right now. I wouldn't want anyone I know to go through this kind of pain I have today.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone that has sent me messages to keep strong. Will would have wanted us to keep our chins up and remember the good times we had with him.

"Heaven has gained an extra angel today, my good friend Will Shaw."
