THE tidal barrier in Hull has been lowered in the River Humber to combat the high levels of surface water in the surrounding areas after heavy rainfall.
A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency said: "We have lowered the Tidal Barrier as a precaution to help ease surface water levels in the area around the River Hull. It has not been lowered because of any tidal surge along the coast."
