AT THE start, it looked like any other 5k race.

But as the runners filed across the finish line, they appeared very different from when they started.

After being blasted with multi-coloured paint during Dove House Hospice's first Colour Run, they were transformed into walking works of art.

Crossing the finishing line with her dog Bailey was Annabel Graves-Pattison, 21, of Brough. She said: "It has been such a fun event.

"I have paint all over me, even in my belly button and under my arms – it has got everywhere."

The run, designed to raise money for the east Hull hospice, took place yesterday at East Park in Holderness Road.

Hundreds of fundraisers were told they could either jog, dance, skip or hop the three-mile route.

Miss Graves-Pattinson decided to take part in the run after the charity provided care for both her grandfathers.

She said: "Dove House have been fantastic in caring for both my grandads.

"One of them has Parkinson's disease and they help him and my nanna.

"They give her a break so she can go out and do the shopping knowing my grandad is being well cared for."

Miss Graves-Pattinson is hoping to take part in the event again next year. She said: "It is so much fun, I would definitely recommend it.

"I often do Race For Life, but this was a lot more fun and something a bit different."

The fun did not stop after the race as the party continued with a Colour Festival, including live bands, music and even more coloured paint.

Wansbeck Primary School teacher Samantha Hessey also took part in the event.

Miss Hessey, 25, was joined by members of her family, including sister Rebecca, and other staff members from the school.

She said: "I'm running in memory of my grandad Jack 'Hess' Hessey.

"He passed away five years ago, but I remember the care Dove House Hospice gave him and it is great to be able to say thank you to them by raising money.

"Once I have collected all my donations, I should have raised about £100, which I am really pleased with.

"I hope they do the event again next year as I would love to enter it again."

The race was entered by people of all ages, with people pushing toddlers in their pushchairs and others bringing their dogs along.

Maureen Hammond, 62, was there to support her daughter and two grandchildren, who were taking part.

Mrs Hammond said: "My daughter Sarah and my two grandchildren Josh and Ellie are running today.

"I saw them off at the starting point and they looked absolutely fantastic in their bright coloured glasses and T-shirts ready to be splattered with the paint.

"I would have loved to have taken part in the event myself, but I am recovering from a small operation. Hopefully, if they do the event next year I will be able to join in then."
