'My 2014 to forget' – Hull KR's Kris Welham

Hull KR's Kris Welham admits 2014 has been a year to forget in his rugby career, leaving his place in the team under threat from the club's new recruits.

It was supposed to be a season where he flourished and moved rapidly towards the 100-try mark for his hometown team.

Instead, his form has been dreadful and he's managed just seven tries, taking him to 83.

Not surprisingly, he wants to put it behind him and kick on into 2015.

"I can't do any worse than I did this season," Welham told the Mail.

"I've had a poor year and I can't figure out why. I want to put this year to bed and hopefully crack on next season.

"It is a big year for me as it will be my ninth year as a professional and it's the last of my contract."

Welham has paid close attention to the recruitment undertaken by Rovers coach Chris Chester.

So far, Ken Sio, Darrell Goulding, Kieran Dixon and Josh Mantellato have been added to freshen up the outside backs.

And Welham will use the off-season to rediscover the form that made him one of Super League's more potent try scorers.

"Chezzy has recruited strongly and I will probably be out of favour," Welham said.

"I don't know what he is feeling about me for next season and things are back to square one for me. The new signings will be a kick up the backside for me. We all need players pressuring us to bring out the best and that will happen to me.

"Maybe I was in my comfort zone but I didn't feel complacent knowing I was the best centre at the club and I'm always going to get picked.

"Sean Gleeson was injured and there was me and Liam Salter as recognised centres but I never felt I was the best."

On a happier note, Welham became a father for the first time when his wife Paris gave birth to Pixie Blossom.

"We went in to hospital at 4am on Sunday and the baby was delivered at 5.07pm," Welham said.

"It's the best feeling in the world and both mum and baby are doing well."
