Hull KR coach Chris Chester admits he wished the season was over after his side's play-off hopes were ended with a 32-14 defeat by Catalan Dragons.

Rovers still have one game to play, at Wakefield this Sunday, but Chester has already switched his focus to the 2015 campaign.

The Robins once again fell apart in the second half. With 10 minutes remaining, they only trailed by four points, before Catalan ripped through them to score three late tries and secure their own play-off place.

Chester cut a frustrated and disappointed figure as he addressed the media afterwards, and admitted he can't wait for the season to finish.

"I do want the season to end now," Chester said.

"We will start planning for next season now. It has been a funny old season. Inconsistency is the word I would use.

"I'd say that we will be looking for a few more players to make the squad up for next year."

The manner of Rovers' defeat to the Frenchmen typified the Robins' season.

It was a game they had a chance of winning, but the passion and desire was lacking, especially towards the end.

Chester will address that issue in what will be a very challenging off-season for him and his players.

With Josh Hodgson playing in his final match in front of the KR home fans, Chester said the defeat wasn't the send-off the club wanted to give their co-captain.

"Josh has been a great leader and a great help to me," added Chester.

"I'm desperately disappointed for him because he was playing his final home game.

"We didn't want to send him out on a bad note. It was a typical end of season performance and it typifies our year.

"We had a good chance to win and we were in it for 50 to 60 minutes, but we just ran out of gas in the end."

Despite the 18-point defeat, Chester was delighted with the bright performance of young debutant Macauley Hallett.

The under-19s player didn't look out of place throughout the 80 minutes, and marked his debut with a very well taken try to reduce the deficit to just 12-10 to the Dragons five minutes before the break.

Chester applauded Hallett for settling into the game well and looking comfortable throughout.

"He played fantastic," Chester said of Hallett.

"He took an early bomb and grew in confidence. He took his try well and showed his promise."

Hallett has done enough to maintain his place in the side for next week's meaningless game at Wakefield.

Sonny Esslemont, who also made his KR debut, should keep his spot as Chester looks to find 17 fit players to take to the field.

"We were really struggling with the outside backs because of injuries," said the Robins head coach.

"We've taken a few bad knocks during the game. We'll see how they shape up early in the week."
