Aaron Heremaia wants to sign off his Hull FC career in style, starting on Sunday at Huddersfield Giants, before heading for a new challenge with Widnes Vikings. James Smailes reports.

WITH every passing day, Aaron Heremaia is increasingly eager to savour those moments often overlooked.

Tomorrow, as the Hull FC coach pulls away from the KC Stadium for a journey no doubt seen as tedious by some of the inhabitants, Heremaia will soak up an atmosphere he'll not experience in such company again.

A final away trip of the season for FC, means a final away game as a Hull player for the popular New Zealander.

Three years after arriving from New Zealand Warriors, Heremaia has just two games remaining in a spell many at Hull will be thankful for.

Having reversed his decision to retire and head home, a two-year deal at Widnes Vikings awaits.

But before he departs, Heremaia is determined to make the most of every moment left in a Black and White shirt.

"As it's coming to an end, I'm just enjoying being around the lads at training," Heremaia told the Mail.

"I'm looking forward to the bus trip away to Huddersfield, it's things like that you try and enjoy. Things that you won't do again with these blokes.

"When you know something is coming to an end you try and enjoy everything you can, especially the little things.

"I think everyone knows I was going to go home at the end of the year, but now I have this new challenge with a new city and that's exciting for me.

"It is what I am used to having travelled the world pretty much my whole rugby career. It's another stepping stone and another environment, but first I have two games left as a Hull player to enjoy."

For the diminutive hooker, the next two outings are a bonus.

Having been injured in the victory over St Helens last month, Heremaia had an operation which at first was feared would rule him out until the final game of the season.

Knowing he was departing, the Kiwi questioned whether his time at Hull had reached a premature end.

Then, sooner than anyone expected, he returned last week to take his place in a Hull side that nilled great rivals Hull KR for the first time in over half a century.

"I wasn't so sure I'd be ready to play in the derby, so to not only play in the game, but also to win and keep them to zero meant it is a game I am always going to remember," explained Heremaia.

"I'll miss the derby games. I was targeting the Leeds match to come back, so credit to the staff that they got me back sooner.

"When I leave and look back, the Challenge Cup final experience is something I'll always remember. Not the game itself, but the whole week leading up to it, and the fans embracing it.

"The Warrington semi-final was another special memory to go alongside last week's derby win, which I'm so happy I got to play in."

Having helped Hull to a confidence-boosting success, the plan now is simple for Heremaia. Win the next two games against quality opposition and leave the club on a relative high note.

That desire starts at Huddersfield tomorrow and ends in difficult fashion at home to Leeds on Friday night.

"I see these games as a chance for us to show those teams that we are good enough to be up there too even if we are not," added Heremaia.

"We've played some good teams of late and pushed them all the way so there's a desire to keep that up until the end of the season.

"As a club going forward into next year, the big question is how does this team find the necessary level of consistency?

"That's the answer that needs to be found because we know how good this side can be, it's just a case of doing it on a regular basis."
