A DRUNKEN birthday night out left a Hull worker with a hefty fine after he was found wandering down the A63 trying to catch a lift home.

Kieran McLoughlin, 28, had been out celebrating his birthday when he had been "plied" with alcohol and left by his friends.

Police found McLoughlin staggering along the carriageway shortly before 4am on August 22.

He has been fined £250 for causing danger to motorists on the A63 after appearing at Hull Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Waseem Raja said: "Police received a call from a member of the public stating there was a male in the middle of the westbound carriageway at the flyover close to Smith & Nephew, standing with his arms spread out.

"Another member of the public reported this as well and police attended the scene."

Officers found McLoughlin staggering between the east and westbound carriageway of the A63.

When they approached him, McLoughlin told them he was trying to get a lift home.

Mr Raja said: "The defendant was arrested for being drunk and disorderly and repeatedly told police 'I was just f***ing trying to get home'."

McLoughlin was later charged with causing danger to road users.

In his defence, solicitor Gary Quantick said: "It was his birthday and he had gone out for a few drinks but he was plied with spirits by his friends and drank far too much.

"He expresses remorse for what he did and is very ashamed of his actions."

The court heard McLou- ghlin, who hails from Chorley and is a welder and fabricator by trade, was working on Hull's Drypool Bridge and was staying at a nearby hotel when the offence occurred.

McLoughlin was also ordered to pay £85 in court costs and a £25 victim surcharge.

Sentencing him, chair of the bench Shane Bilby, said: "I worked away for a long time and know how tempting it can be to have a few drinks. However, you acted very irresponsibly.

"In this court we see a lot of people convicted of driving at speeds of more than 70mph on that road.

"There was a real risk you could have been killed. You have been fined for your stupidity."
