FITNESS enthusiasts are making tracks to try out a revamped East Riding leisure centre with a "wow factor".

East Riding Council is spending £6m upgrading Haltemprice Leisure Centre, which has been relaunched as East Riding Leisure Haltemprice.

The latest phase of improvements at the Anlaby venue has seen the opening of a new Tone Zone.

East Riding Council leader Councillor Stephen Parnaby was among the first to check out the facilities, which he said had a real "wow factor".

Cllr Parnaby said: "I don't think you will see or find a better local authority centre anywhere in the country.

"It looks absolutely tremendous. It really does have the 'wow' factor.

"The centre was opened in 1973 and has been given a new lease of life. It really is exceptional."

Following the recent opening of the new pool area, a 90-station fitness suite has now also opened to the public.

Open days have been held across the bank holiday weekend, with the centre officially opening to the public today.

Tony Beach, who has lost 6st over the past two years thanks to the support of the centre and its staff, was looking forward to visiting the new Tone Zone.

He said: "I'm going to visit to have a proper look around.

"I have been told it's absolutely fantastic, so I'm looking forward to seeing it."

Haltemprice regular Elizabeth Gomez-Cliff, who has been using the centre's facilities for the past four months, also plans to explore the new Tone Zone.

She said: "The staff are absolutely fantastic, very helpful and kind. I will be coming along for sure.

"I think it's amazing what they are doing here, not only for people like me who have difficulty walking, but also for young adults and older people too."

The new Tone Zone features a new indoor cycling studio which is the first of its kind for East Riding Leisure.

Equipped with My Ride, a virtual instructor system, customers of all abilities can join in classes all day, every day.

Cllr Parnaby praised staff at the centre, as well as contractors Hobson Porter, which ensured the centre has remained open throughout the refurbishment.

He said: "I have been fortunate enough to have seen the project from when the contractors were first starting on site to where we are now and I think it's amazing how they have worked with staff to keep the centre open.

"I would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while the work has been going on.

"We have got a fantastic customer base, which we know will grow."

Haltemprice is the most well-used leisure centre in the East Riding and the upgrade is designed to make it fit for the demands of more than a million visitors a year.

The transformation of the centre includes bringing a GP surgery and library under the same roof.

The 20-month project is set to be completed this autumn.
