Hull City can beat Stoke – if they stop the crosses

I'll be at Hull City's home opener today (Sunday) which promises to be played in front of a bumper crowd, writes Dean Windass.

I know we are only one game into the new Premier League season, but City are already three points clear of the relegation places and the goal is staying there or preferably getting even further away.

Despite the defeat in Belgium on Thursday night, there should be plenty of confidence in the squad ahead of facing Stoke City.

The Lokeren game was different because there were nine changes made from the side that started the 1-0 win at Queens Park Rangers.

Stoke are a different team these days under Mark Hughes and City will find it tough going at times.

They are a big, physically strong side who are notoriously good from set pieces.

The secret is stopping the crosses into the box. But that won't be as easy as it sounds because there is a lot of quality in Hughes' side with the likes of Glenn Whelan pulling the strings in midfield.

The Tigers are at home and at the start of any season I always say that winning your home matches is the first step to staying up.

Stoke come to the KC still hurting from their 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa so they will be desperate to get off the mark.

Last season's fixture produced a dour 0-0 just before Christmas but this should be a better game.

City will be favourites to win given the home advantage.

The first home match of the season always generates a great atmosphere but that will only last if the players start fast. I want them to get off on the front foot, play the game in Stoke's half and make life as difficult for Ryan Shawcross and co as possible.

I'm looking forward to it, though, and I hope Tom Ince has a good game in a 2-0 win for the Tigers.
