Hull is being urged to show off its pedal power when the Sky Ride returns to the city on Sunday (August 17).

Thousands of cyclists are expected to take to the traffic-free city centre's streets.

Last year the city welcomed 5,000 riders of all ages and abilities who enjoyed many of the city's most famous landmarks, including The Guildhall, Holy Trinity Church, the Marina, The Deep and Queens Gardens.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, portfolio holder for culture, leisure, events and public wellbeing at Hull City Council, said: "The excitement is really building for this year's Sky Ride Hull event. Hull's a great city for cycling.

"This is the only Sky Ride taking place within the Humber region and we are delighted to give people the chance to come and visit Hull and see the many fantastic and historic buildings and landmarks while riding on two wheels.

"We hope everyone has a fantastic day and that the sun is going to shine."

Motorists are being warned about a number of road closures from 6am to 6pm on Sunday for the Sky Ride event, although the event itself is held between 10am and 3pm.

The list of closures includes Alfred Gelder Street, Bowlalley Lane, Bishop Lane, Carr Lane, Chapel Lane, Chariot Street, Guildhall Road, Ghandi Way, Grimston Street, High Street, Humber Place, Humber Street, Jameson Street, King Edward Street, Liberty Lane, Lowgate, Market Place, Manor Street, Nelson Street, North Church Side and Paragon Street.

Also closed will be Pier Street, Posterngate, Princes Dock Street, Queen Street, Queens Dock Avenue, Saville Street, Scale Lane, Scale Lane Staith, Silver Street, St Peters Street, South Street, Tower Street, Trinity House Lane, Vernon Street, Wellington Street, Whitefriargate and Wilberforce Drive.

For people coming from out of town, or who are not able to bike into the event, a number of council car parks will be open for the duration of the event, which will also be free of charge.

These include Francis Street, Blanket Row, Bond Street, Worship Street, Mason Street and Charlotte Street.

Daniel Goodey, recreation manager for British Cycling, said: "The aim of Sky Ride Hull is to get friends and family together and cycle around the city and have lots of fun along the way by taking part in the activities, especially as it's not a race.

"It also gives people who maybe have not ridden a bike for a while the opportunity in a traffic-free environment to build their confidence, which will encourage them to continue to cycle in the future.

"Cycling is a great way to get active, burn excess calories and live a healthier lifestyle while taking in some of our lovely scenery."

Visit www.goskyride.com/hull to sign up to the event.

Alternatively, turn up on the day with your bike in Queen Victoria Square, at any time from 10am to 2pm. The event will finish at 3pm.

'Route is great for all abilities'

COUNCILLOR Mary Glew, Lord Mayor of Hull and Admiral of the Humber, is launching this year's Sky Ride Hull with Kyle Evans, GB Cycling Team BMX Rider.

She said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to launch the fourth Sky Ride Hull event this Sunday.

"I hope many people will join us in the city centre with their bikes and take advantage of cycling around traffic-free streets.

"The 6km route is great for everyone, no matter what their age or ability. There will be many free activities for all the family to take part and enjoy.

"It is all about having fun and encouraging more people to get on their bikes on a regular basis, gain confidence and get out and about."
