A YOUNG woman is fighting for her life in a hospital bed tonight after she was mowed down by a car in east Hull.
Police are hunting the driver of the vehicle who ran from the scene in Marfleet Lane, near Preston Road.
The woman, 21, who residents say was pushing a trolley, went to cross the road at a set of traffic lights when she was hit by a dark blue Volkswagen.
She is believed to be from the Preston Road estate.
Police say the driver pulled his car to the side of the road, checked the condition of the woman before fleeing the scene.
The incident happened at around 4.30pm.
Sergeant Stuart Farquharson said: "A 21-year-old woman is in Hull Royal Infirmary in a critical condition and fighting for her life.
"She was crossing the road when she was hit by a Volkswagen car.
"The male driver got out of the vehicle before running off.
"This is obviously a very serious incident indeed and I would urge anyone who saw what happened to come forward.
"Humberside Police are now making urgent enquiries into finding the driver.
"We need people to come forward as soon as possible.
"The woman's family is being helped by specially-trained officers after this very sad incident."
Marfleet Lane is tonight cordoned off as officers launch their investigation.
The Volkswagen was found with a smashed windscreen and parked yards from what is believed to be the victim's trolley.
Sam Young, who lives in Marfleet Lane, said it was an accident waiting to happen.
She said: "People drive so fast down here it is frightening.
"I must know three or four people in east Hull who have suffered minor injuries after being hit by cars in this area.
"We are a tight-knit community here and we hope and prey that this woman gets through this."
An ambulance, several police cars and a collision investigation van all attended the scene.
A resident from Marfleet Lane, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I was on my bike when I turned in from Preston Road and I saw this man running across the road really quickly.
"I thought he must have been getting chased by someone or something because he looked really worried.
"The next thing I know I saw a woman in the road, not far from a blue car with a cracked windscreen.
"It was horrible and we just hope the woman pulls through because 21 is no age at all."
