Archivists are appealing for documents relating to a "groundbreaking" event more than 200 years ago.
Staff at the Treasure House in Beverley want to find out more about when a large meteorite struck near the village of Wold Newton, near Driffield, on December 13, 1795.
It landed on the grounds of Wold Cottage, which was owned by local magistrate Major Edward Topham.
Sam Bartle, the collections officer for East Riding Archives and Local Studies Service, said: "We have an original report of the incident from a 1796 edition of the London Chronicle and various publications but it's a crying shame we don't have more contemporary evidence preserved in our region of what was such a monumental event.
"It is a long shot, but it is surprising what people have stored in their attics and you never know, there might still be one or two Edward Topham letters hanging around in the East Riding that we could preserve for posterity."
