Construction business Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £75m contract to build two footbridges over Castle Street in Hull. It has signed an an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) deal with the Highways Agency to design and build the bridges and an underpass, linking parts of the city now split by the A63. The 1.5km scheme aims to improve journey times by creating a split-level junction between the road and Ferensway, with a 400m dual-carriageway underpass carrying east-west traffic below north-south traffic. One of the bridges approved is the high-profile link for pedestrians, disabled people and cyclists connecting Princes Quay with the marina and the second will be to the west of the city centre in Porter Street. A third bridge which would have gone up at Market Place has been abandoned in favour of improving the underpass linking High Street and Blackfriargate. Under the contract, Balfour Beatty will manage design and development and assist with consultations, with building to begin in 2016 or 2017. Chief executive officer Nicholas Pollard said: "This award to improve journey times on the main route through Hull builds upon our 20-year portfolio of work for the Highways Agency and our extensive experience of successful delivery of ECI contracts, including the recent A3 Hindhead Tunnel and A46 Newark to Widmerpool projects, through which we were able to deliver substantial cost efficiencies to the Highways Agency."
