The Scottish international netted twice as the Tigers beat Harrogate 5-0 in a first run-out on Monday.
He also formed an impressive partnership with two-goal Robbie Brady.
"All five goals we scored were very good," Boyd said.
"Their keeper hasn't had many saves to make but he didn't have any chance with any of the goals.
"I was delighted with my finishing in a good win.
"I enjoy pre-season friendlies, especially when you score in a 5-0 win.
"But it's more important getting the fitness up to the required levels.
"We work hard for a few weeks and it's good that we have started pre-season early.
"There is nothing better than playing games."
Boyd was one of six players to get the full 90 minutes on Monday night, but feels he needs more game time to get his fitness up to the levels required in the Premier League.
"Fitness wise, I think I need a few more games to get to where I want to be for the start of the season," Boyd said. "There's nothing better than match fitness.
"You can do all the running in the world in training but until you start playing games, it's totally different.
"Training was really hard in Portugal and I expect the gaffer will step it up this week and next.
"It's important to get 90 minutes in straight away especially as we are starting pre-season a week earlier than we would normally have.
"We have a lot of games this week but I thought we looked good against Harrogate Town fitness wise."
