Police are warning people to check before they buy used goods to make sure they are not stolen.

Officers said a man who bought a bike for £50 from Walton Street Market in Hull later checked online and discovered it was stolen.

The bike, which was worth more than £300, had been stolen from a house in St John Street in Bridlington. It has now been returned to its owner.

Police say the online database CheckMEND can be used to check whether goods have been stolen.

PC Chris Hardy, Hull's secondhand dealers officer, said: "If anyone tells you they can get you an expensive item at a knocked down price they are probably handling stolen goods and giving burglars a reason to steal."
