IT SEEMS getting lost on country roads while working against the clock is not enough to put off some.

Since the first episode of On The Yorkshire Buses screened on Channel 5 last Friday, EYMS has seen the number of visitors to its online career page increase almost five-fold.

Peter Shipp, the firm's chairman and chief executive, has already received 11 applications from people wanting to work alongside the stars of the series, which gives an insight into the workings of the company.

He said: "On The Yorkshire Buses gives viewers a good idea of what it is like working for our company. Most of our staff love coming to work every day and they do a grand job."

In the first of eight episodes, which was viewed by 1.2m people, Rod Hebden, 65, who is more used to driving buses in Hull, got lost while covering an unfamiliar rural route.

Mr Hebden, who has worked for the company for ten years, resorted to asking amused passengers for directions.

Mr Shipp, who was given a sneak preview of the show before it aired, said: "The last episode showed things going wrong, but it also showed how we put them right.

"The majority of people who featured in the first episode were very pleased with the way they were portrayed.

"I am very proud of all my staff."

Mr Shipp says working for EYMS is enjoyable, even if it is stressful keeping to tight schedules.

He said: "I keep telling people that if I worked for a different company I'd have retired a good while ago. EYMS is a really nice company to work for."

It is hoped passenger numbers will also spike on the back of show.

"I would hope people would want to come and see the stars of the show," Mr Shipp said.

Mr Shipp said staff are already poking fun at each other's newfound fame.

"There's a few nicknames being thrown about," he said. "Some of our drivers now have catchphrases, thanks to what they've said on the show."

Mr Shipp, who has been with the company since 1980, is well known in the industry, often leading the fight for improved funding for bus companies.

And he hopes On The Yorkshire Buses will further help to boost EYMS's profile.

The Commonwealth Games, which begins on July 23 in Glasgow, is also giving EYMS valuable national exposure.

Mr Shipp said: "We have ten buses up there shuttling athletes and coaches between venues. By all accounts it is going very well.

"We have a very good set of drivers at EYMS."

On The Yorkshire Buses airs on Fridays at 8pm.
