A man used carp fishing as an excuse for growing cannabis.

Paul Thomas, 40, pleaded guilty to producing a small quantity of cannabis at Beverley Magistrates' Court yesterday.

District Judge Fred Rutherford said Thomas had said he was growing the class B drug "for his own use, either for carp fishing or smoking".

Prosecuting, Andrew Vaughan said there were no aggravating circumstances surrounding the offence.

Handing Thomas a three-year conditional discharge, Judge Rutherford said: "You tried to make all kinds of excuses, carp fishing being one of them. As it is, prosecution saw no aggravating features and accept that it was for your own use."

The plants and drug paraphernalia will be destroyed.

Thomas was also ordered to pay £80 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
