Moonbeams Festival: Wolds, ale and good music – 'a little piece of heaven'

A festival described by Adrian Edmondson as "a little piece of heaven on the Wolds" is to return for the sixth time next week.

The Moonbeans Festival, which is held at the Wold Top Brewery at Hunmanby, near Filey, will fling open its doors next Friday.

Event organiser Leila Cooper said the festival had originally been inspired by a series of garden parties she had held at her parents' East Yorkshire farm.

She said: "The festival's grown a little bit each year, but it's still very much a 'boutiquey' event and that's the way I like it.

"People who come each year say it feels like they're coming to my birthday party because it's still quite small and intimate – only with some great bands on."

The festival location at the Wold Top Brewery, on top of Hunmanby Hill with views spreading out over the Yorkshire Wolds, is also a major draw for punters, says Leila.

"Tom and Gill (Mellor, owners of Wold Top Brewery) used to bring me the beer for the parties I had at the farm, and they are both really big music-lovers so when the idea came to hold a festival it seemed like the perfect fit.

"Wold Top's always been my favourite beer so it was a win-win for me!

"I approached them and the rest is history."

Headlining the two-day "boutique" festival next week are up-and-coming Scottish folksters Breabach, ceilidh band The Peatbog Faeries and Nizlopi, best-known for their number one hit The JCB Song and who were also name-checked by Ed Sheeran this week as a major influence.

Award-winning Breabach have been described as the "exciting new face" of Scottish folk music and recently released their fourth album, called Ùrlar.

The quintet use everything from bagpipes to bouzoukis, flutes and fiddles to create their energetic sound.

Leila said: "I'm really looking forward to seeing Breaback and The Peatbog Faeries, who are like a whirlwind live.

"They've got so much energy and have so much fun on stage that I know they will go down a treat."

This year, innovations at Moonbeams include a surprise new "Vista" stage, a new bierkeller-style bar and a return of the popular Peace Café, providing locally- sourced food.

Other acts due to make an appearance include local favourite Martyn Joseph, festival regular Edwina Hayes and five-piece alternative Celtic rockers The Van Susans, who say they have been described as a 21st Century cross between The Levellers and The Waterboys.
