A JURY has been shown CCTV footage of the final moments of a Hull father who was beaten to death on a new year night out.

Steven Herbert died after he was assaulted as he made his way to a party with a group of people he had met inside The Yorkshireman pub.

CCTVThe footage played in court shows Samuel Jordan running along Beverley Road away from Trafalgar Street at 6.03am on New Year's Day. He is followed by Soul Humphries.

Mr Herbert was last seen on CCTV five minutes before he was beaten on the corner of Beverley Road and Trafalgar Street at 6am on New Year's Day.

Soul Humphries, Samuel Jordan and Tiffany Clark admit being involved in a fight with the group, including Mr Herbert, but deny his murder.

They were also caught on camera during New Year's Eve and into the early hours of New Year's Day as they visited several city pubs.

Mr Humphries and Mr Jordan, both 22, were also caught on camera running along Beverley Road at 6.03am, shortly after the fight broke out.

Detective Constable Steven Baines, who analysed the footage, told Hull Crown Court: "The last image we see is of Mr Herbert's group heading in the direction of the scene at around 6am.

"This is the time when the incident takes place off camera. The next piece of footage we see is Samuel Jordan running, followed by Soul Humphries."

Mr Herbert's best friend Shaun Duffill told the court they had gone into the city centre together after seeing in the new year at a party, but became separated inside The Yorkshireman pub in Lombard Street.

"We had a couple of drinks, we were dancing, chatting," he said.

"It was that full that we just sort of split up. I didn't know if he had gone for a cig. Then I got to that point in the night where I'd had enough.

"I went to look for him. I went to the toilet, I couldn't see him, so I went to the smoking area and I couldn't see him.

"I assumed he had maybe thought the same as me and gone home, so I left."

Mr Herbert, 34, was seen on CCTV leaving the bar at 5.47am with a group of people he had met that evening. They decided to go to a flat belonging to Craig Monroe, who was part of the group, to carry on drinking.

While Mr Herbert was in the city centre, Miss Clark, Mr Humphries and Mr Jordan had also been out.

Miss Clark was first seen at 9.30pm entering The Bosun pub in Hessle Road, west Hull, where she was joined by Mr Humphries at 10.48pm.

They are seen outside the pub at 12.50am, when it is believed they headed into the city centre.

At 12.12am, Mr Jordan was seen on CCTV in the city centre with Chelsee Daly. They went to Propaganda and were later refused entry to Fuel.

They then headed to the Star And Garter in Portland Street, city centre.

Miss Clark and Mr Humphries arrived at the same bar at 2.23am, but were turned away. They were later seen inside on CCTV at about 3am.

One hour later, Miss Clark and Mr Jordan were seen in the beer garden of the pub.

DC Baines said: "This seems to be the first time they have met that night and we see them hug."

They were seen with a woman called Lauren Brown, who was at the scene of the assault of Mr Herbert.

She has not been charged with any offences and will be acting as a prosecution witness.

All four got into a taxi outside the pub at 5.35am. Two minutes later, Mr Herbert's group began walking towards Beverley Road.

Mr Humphries, Mr Jordan, Miss Clark and Miss Brown got out of the taxi in Spring Bank and started to walk towards Beverley Road.

Both groups met at the junction of Trafalgar Street at about 6am.

Jack Ellerby, who was with Mr Herbert, told the court: "I remember another group appearing from nowhere."

He said, after seeing two men confronting Mr Monroe, he saw one of the men punching Mr Herbert in the face several times, despite his efforts to defend himself.

Mr Herbert was eventually knocked to the ground.

Ryan Russell, who was also with Mr Herbert, said he was punched by one of the two men after telling them he didn't want any trouble.

He said: "I didn't want to have a fight, I just wanted a nice, friendly night."

Mr Russell said the men then began attacking Mr Herbert. He said: "I just remember them like grabbing him and just punching him. It was several times by both males and he fell to the ground.

"There was a blonde female who then appeared to kick him. I think it was in the face. She then came up to me and Martin and she was like screaming at us aggressively.

"We both just said we didn't want no trouble."

The court has heard Mr Humphries admit kicking Mr Herbert's knee and punching him in the face, but says he acted in self-defence after Mr Herbert "attacked" him.

Mr Jordan said he tried to defend Mr Humphries, but did not strike Mr Herbert.

Miss Clark also claims she was punched by Mr Herbert and admits kicking him once in the shoulder as he lay on the ground.

The trial, which is expected to last three weeks, continues.
