A 12-YEAR-OLD boy remains in a coma today after the motorbike he was riding, with a toddler on the back, crashed with a car.
His devastated parents are keeping a bedside vigil, while friends and family at the travelling site he lives on have described him as a "polite" boy who would "do anything for anyone".
Named only as Lewis, he has suffered serious head, pelvis and liver injuries as well as a fractured leg. Humberside Police have confirmed he was not wearing a helmet.
The three-year-old, named only as Eddie, has a fractured pelvic bone.
One traveller, who would only give his name as Josh, 20, raced to the scene after the camp heard a "terrifying" squeal as the bike crashed with the Nissan Almera at 12.40pm on Saturday, outside the camp in Woldgate, Bridlington.
"I could see little Eddie was moving and crying, so I knew he was all right, but I could see Lewis was in a bad state," said Josh. "He wasn't breathing and his lips were blue.
"I just kept talking to him as I knew not to move him. He was snuffling through his nose, so I cleared what was there and then his dad came.
"I didn't leave his side. It still hasn't sunk in. He is as close to my heart as he is everyone else here. We just hope he is going to be OK."
Lewis was resuscitated three times at the scene and airlifted to the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he has had an operation on his pelvis and leg. Eddie was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary.
The driver of the Nissan, a 31-year-old Bridlington man, was coming from the direction of the Woldgate Trekking Centre.
Lewis had been riding his blue Yamaha motorbike, which had been made road-worthy just one day before, on the fields running alongside the road. He came over a series of ramps, leading into Woldgate, when he crashed with the car.
Both he and Eddie were launched about 70m into the air.
The driver, who suffered minor whiplash injuries, called an ambulance.
Eddie's uncle, who would only give his name as Isaac, 50, said: "It was terrifying. There were people in the trailers who heard it happen.
"There was this squeal that was really loud and seemed to go on for ages and then everyone started running to the scene.
"Everyone was in shock, the kids were crying their eyes out.
"Both sets of parents are in hysterics, they can't do anything but be there for him.
"Everyone here is so sad, it has been so quiet here since it happened."
Hayley, 19, has been getting hourly updates from Lewis's parents, who moved to the site in January.
She said: "He is in a real bad state. We thought he had died."
Josh said: "I have never met a lad like Lewis before.
"He would do anything for anyone. He might be 12 but he acts 16 years old.
"He loves his motorbikes, pedal bikes and horses. He is a young lad who is into everything.
"We are just hoping he stays strong and pulls through. Everyone is thinking of him."
A police spokesman said: "The child was not wearing a helmet and sustained serious head injuries as well as multiple fractures to the body.
"He was taken to James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough, where he is in a critical but stable condition.
"A three-year-old child, travelling as pillion passenger, suffered minor injuries."
Anyone who may have seen the collision or either vehicle prior to the collision, should call PC Steve Naylor on 101, quoting log 271.
'We don't have any motorbikes here now'TRAVELLERS living at the camp in Woldgate, Bridlington, have sent all their motorbikes for scrap since the crash.
Lots of people living at the site ride the motorbikes on the fields running alongside the road.
But since Lewis, 12, and Eddie, three, were in the crash, they have got rid of all the bikes.
Eddie's uncle Isaac said: "We don't have any motorbikes here now, they have all gone.
"As soon as this happened, we got rid of them all. Although, the same thing might have happened if he was on a push bike and it could still happened again."
Josh fixed the motorbike for Lewis a day before the crash.
Josh said: "I wouldn't have done it if I'd have known.
"I will never fix another bike again. We don't want them here anymore."
