A WOMAN who is 37 weeks pregnant was left badly shaken after her car hit loose chunks of kerb and careered off the road.
Courtney Horn, 20, was driving through North Bransholme to meet her grandmother when the accident happened on Monday.
Her two-year-old son was also in the car at the time.
Councillors say the estate has become plagued by large pieces of "stick-up kerb" that were brought in when the housing estate was built more than 40 years ago.
Now, they are starting to fall off and are proving hazardous for motorists across the estate.
Ms Horn said: "It was horrible. I was driving and after I turned a corner, I hit what turned out to be a bit of loose kerb and completely lost control of my car – I only have a small Citroen C1.
"The car went up the pavement and I was in real pain, what with the pregnancy and everything. I panicked. Luckily, there was a man driving not far behind me and he got out and helped.
"I was badly shaken and so was my little boy, Brodie.
"There are chunks of kerb all over the estate and the council needs to do something about this as soon as possible before it's too late.
"It is like a minefield on North Bransholme at the moment. It was scary."
Ms Horn, of east Hull, is now faced with a bill of £250 to fix her vehicle – something she says she cannot afford.
She said: "It is our only method of transport for when I go into labour and there is no way I can afford that kind of bill at the moment.
"I am worried where I am going to give birth.
"These chunks of kerb are so dangerous and I know there have been several other examples of people getting injured.
"I didn't even see it. I turned the corner and the next thing I had crashed the car – I am furious."
Ms Horn says Hull City Council has refused to pay her car repair bill.
Bransholme East councillor Anita Harrison says the authority must do all it can as soon as possible.
She said: "Somebody is going to get killed very soon unless we do something about this immediately.
"The problem is right through the estate.
"We keep getting told there is no money in the budget, but we absolutely need to sort this now.
"There is no tomorrow.
"I am inundated with complaints from people about loose bits of kerb all over the roads.
"From what I understand, Ms Horn burst her tyre, wrecked her alloy and more than anything, had an almighty scare.
"She is about to give birth and nobody should have to drive on roads as bad as they are in North Bransholme.
"It is totally unacceptable. The roads are atrocious."
Kerbs 'not very robust'Hull City Council says it believes the kerbs are being broken by bin collectors.
A council officer, who spoke during a meeting of the North Carr Area Committee on Wednesday said: "The stick-up kerbs are fine until they have any contact. It is not a very robust design.
"It is how the Bransholme estate was built more than 40 years ago and that is what we are going to be stuck with."
Bransholme East councillor Peter Clark said: "There have been loose bits of kerb in the road for several months now and it is getting absolutely ridiculous. The roads are in an atrocious state and something needs to be done about it as soon as possible.
"Someone is going to be very seriously hurt if we are not careful."
