LITTLE-known Holderness links with The Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien have been celebrated by schoolchildren in Withernsea.
Pupils have been exploring the work of the author to coincide with the recent film release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which is based on Tolkien's 1937 fantasy novel.
Students at Withernsea High School and local primary schools learned that Tolkien spent time in Holderness during the First World War.
Literacy co-ordinator Katie McCreaddie organised a Hobbit Week for pupils to raise the profile of literacy, highlighting Tolkien's little-known links to the area.
She said: "The film release of The Hobbit has given us a fantastic opportunity to celebrate Tolkien's work and his links with the area.
"There has been a very positive response from the students to the Hobbit-themed activities, which just shows great literature is timeless."
Pupils learned that Tolkien was briefly in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, during the First World War.
While walking through woodland in Roos, Tolkien was inspired to create the character Lúthien, who was said to be loosely based upon his wife, Edith.
Lúthien would go on to make various appearances throughout Tolkien's work in his fantasy world Middle Earth.
To learn more about Tolkien's connection with the area, Year 6 primary school pupils from Roos and Withernsea visited the town's high school to explore aspects of the author's work.
Primary school children worked alongside Withernsea High School's students and took part in Hobbit- themed activities, including a Hobbit treasure hunt and designing a film poster.
Other events included the screening of the first Lord Of The Rings film at lunchtimes.
There was also a tutor-time riddle- writing competition and a Hobbit quiz quest for pupils, who searched for answers around the Hull Road secondary school.
Members of Withernsea High School's staff, including headteacher Richard Williman, were also filmed reading excerpts from The Hobbit.
The excerpts were displayed on the school's internal LCD display system.
