McMillan Nursery School in north Hull is 'outstanding', says Ofsted

A CITY nursery school has been told it is outstanding in every area by education watchdog Ofsted.

McMillan Nursery School was highly praised for the standard of education it offers children aged two and three.

The report said: "The staff in the nursery have high expectations of themselves and the children who attend. The teaching is enthusiastic and has a clear purpose.

"As a consequence, the children make exceptional progress in their learning and development. The environment is highly stimulating and organised.

"Children access a wide range of areas and resources so they can experiment, investigate and challenge themselves, both indoors and outside. For example, a mud kitchen in the outdoor area gives children opportunities to learn about cause and effect. The children are strongly encouraged to explore and use objects and materials in creative ways."

Leadership at the nursery was also praised, as well as the partnership with parents.

Andrew Shimmin, head at the nursery school, in 11th Avenue, north Hull, said: "The staff work incredibly hard to create the best possible environment for young children at McMillan and it's great to have that recognised by Ofsted inspectors in this way.

"The children love coming to nursery every day, and it's a privilege for us to work with them and help them explore and learn about the world."

Among many things that were praised by the watchdog was the outdoor learning at the nursery.

Mr Shimmin said: "Outdoor learning is a big part of our school. Children can choose to play and work inside or outside all year round and in all weathers. "We provide full waterproof suits to keep children dry and warm when they go out in the rain and snow."

Parents' involvement in their children's learning is crucial, especially in the early years, so we work hard at trying to develop partnerships.

We're really happy this has been recognised by Ofsted, along with all the other fantastic things in the report.
