THOUSANDS of people have made this year's Beverley Folk Festival one of the biggest ever.

Music fans flocked to the three-day festival at Beverley Racecourse this weekend, which was headlined by Billy Bragg and Chas & Dave.

There was also a programme of comedy and literature events, including Michael Morpurgo, the author of War Horse, leading a reading and songs from the musical version of the story.

Organiser Chris Wade said the event had been a huge success, partly thanks to the good weather.

She said: "It has been fantastic.

"There has been a really good response to everything and a good turnout of at least several thousand people.

"It is probably the biggest event that we have ever done and with one of the biggest turnouts.

"It is a lot of work that goes into it and we have been very busy throughout the year but when you look around and see everyone, it is very satisfying.

"It is good to know people are enjoying themselves and the weather definitely helps with that.

"The response has been tremendous. We have had good crowds and all the concerts have been good.

"We are already selling tickets for next year."

The festival, which has been running for more than 30 years, also featured performances from local unsigned artists.

Vicky Taitche said the festival's eclectic line-up is one of the reasons she has been coming over from West Yorkshire for six years.

She said: "We absolutely love it, there is something for everyone across age ranges. It is a fantastic festival.

"I arrived on Friday with my family and our friends, who have children the same age, and we have camped all weekend.

"The event with Michael Morpurgo, who is a bit of a hero of mine as a writer, was fantastic. It was very moving, especially with it being the centenary of the First World War.

"The music was fantastic with it and his reading really brought history to life, for both young and old.

"All of the folk music at the festival has been fantastic too, and the atmosphere is just wonderful."

Billy Bragg, who headlined on Friday night, tweeted after his performance.

He wrote: "Great gig at Beverley Festival last night."
