A LOVING father and popular city doorman will be remembered at a special gig next month.

Stuart Mathers was found dead in his garage when firefighters battled a blaze at his home in Hyde Park Road, Kingswood, in the early hours of the morning on June 11.

Tributes from across the city were paid to Stuart, who was in his 40s.

Now, night venue Diva's, where Stuart worked as a doorman, will stage an event in his memory, with city band The Costellos headlining the show.

The event will take place at the club, in Anlaby Road, on Thursday, July 3.

Bar manager Lee Brewster said: "Stuart was the best. It really is as simple as that. He was a brilliant doorman and a brilliant man – and so many people have said that, not just me.

"He was a friend to me and so many people. This part of town has not only lost a top doorman and friend to most, but just the best person.

"He was considered part of the family at Diva's Bar.

"We are keen to do this event in his memory and we expect a lot of people to come along and pay their respects.

"He was so well known across different parts of Hull because of the jobs he did.

"We would encourage anyone who knew Stuart to come along."

Initially, Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service launched an investigation into Stuart's death. But this was soon closed after officers concluded there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Close friend Danny Aldred said: "I worked alongside Stuart at both Yellow and Cheeky Monkeys bars.

"It is such sad news and there is a lot of shock still.

"He was an absolute gentleman and a well-liked man.

"I had a lot of time for him and he was very highly spoken of by people who worked in the shops around the Holderness Road area, next to the butchers shop in which he worked.

"He was always known as the peacemaker."

Stuart worked at Don Dixon Butchers in Holderness Road.

He is believed to have lived on the Kingswood estate for about two years and had a daughter.

The Mail reported last week how residents in Hyde Park spilled out on to the street after hearing a loud explosion, coming from Stuart's semi-detached house.

When neighbours got outside they spotted the large blaze and the fire brigade was called.

A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "Everyone has been left in shock, to be honest.

"There was a really loud bang in the early hours of the morning and before we knew it everyone was out on the street. It was chaos and nobody had any sleep.

"It was then we saw a garage door come flying into the road and then there was a large fire.

"There were children crying. It was horrible.

"We didn't particularly know the people who lived there but they have always been very polite."

It is believed the fire started in the garage but it is not known why Stuart was in there.

Tickets for the event in his memory cost £2.

As well as The Costellos providing entertainment from 9pm, there will be a raffle.

Money raised will go towards Stuart's funeral.
