THEY'VE swapped the pastries for poultry and parted with the pounds.

Now, six men in East Yorkshire are starting 2013 a lot lighter.

The group have all attended Slimming World groups in North Ferriby and Brough and have seen the weight fall off.

Between them they have lost more than 15st.

They have marched into the new year feeling healthier and fitter as a result.

Group leader Sue Giblin has been running classes for 18 years and says weight loss is still seen as a women's issue.

She said: "Men seem to think slimming classes are a women's environment, so you don't really get many attending.

"But we are having more men joining.

"You get one man join and then others follow suit."

The six men who have fought the fat are Danny Platten, 33, Pete Dykes, 67, his son Steve Dykes, 43, Keith Hickman, 45, Chris Duckles, 55, and Alan Abbott, 56.

Keith joined after he was warned his weight could lose him his job.

He said: "I'm a lorry driver and, once I turned 45 last year, I had to have a medical and apply for my licence again. The woman who did it basically said I would struggle to get it because of my weight.

"She told me to lose weight and get my BMI down, so I joined Slimming World."

Keith used to enjoy crisps, pies and takeaways.

Serial snacker Danny admits pastries were his weakness too.

He said: "It was my wife who wanted to me to join – she was worried about my health.

"Pastries were my worst thing. I could eat two or three sausage rolls in one go.

"I was getting bigger and bigger and not really doing anything to better myself."

Danny has three boys – Jayden, 15, Samuel, 11, and Benjamin, 10, who all enjoy football.

He hopes the weight loss will enable him to help coach Samuel, the biggest football fan of the lot, and his team-mates.

For Pete, it was a triple heart bypass that spurred him into action.

Since his ordeal, he has tried for 15 years to lose weight, but has never had much luck.

He said: "I go with my daughter and we help each other along.

"Since losing the weight, I've been able to lower my medication, which is brilliant news.

"I feel so much more healthier than before."

Pete's son Steve also attends the classes. Steve said: "Since dad's triple heart bypass, I've always had it in my mind to lose weight.

"All the family knew we had to watch our eating habits because it could happen to us.

"I'm a runner, so I was 12st 10lb when I started, but even then I was struggling.

"I'm now a lot healthier than I was."

Chris says he joined Slimming World after realising he hated looking in the mirror.

He said: "I was completely out of condition and was in a bad way.

"I've always liked vegetables, don't get me wrong, but I was quite a chocoholic too.

"I can't believe the difference now though – there is still a belly when I look in the mirror but it is getting smaller."

Alan joined with his wife Judith. Now the couple are both feeling the benefits of a trimmer, leaner look.

Alan said: "I was quite podgy when I joined.

"T-shirts weren't fitting anymore and, although I played football, I knew I'd put on weight.

"It was getting out of hand.

"But now I feel a lot better. My clothes aren't tight any more."
