Police have concluded there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a popular Hull doorman. Stuart Mathers, a father in his forties, was found dead in his garage after a large fire on a housing estate in the early hours of Wednesday.

He was discovered when firefighters battled the blaze at his home in Hyde Park Road, Kingswood.

Other residents had spilled out onto the street after hearing a loud explosion.

The Mail reported on Thursday how Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service had launched a joint investigation.

A Humberside Police statement last night said: "There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Stuart Mathers and a coroner's inquest will follow.

"No arrests have been made and there is nothing more to add from a police perspective."

Floral tributes have been paid to Mr Mathers outside Diva's Bar in Anlaby Road, city centre, where he worked as a doorman. Heartfelt messages have also been left by his family members.

Bar manager Lee Brewster said: "Stuart was the best. It really is as simple as that. He was a brilliant doorman and a brilliant man.

"He was a friend to me and so many people. This part of town has not only lost a top doorman and friend to most, but Stuart was considered part of the family at Diva's Bar.

"We have had so many tributes left outside our main doors and they have now spread onto the pavement.

"He was one of the most well-known doormen in the city and he will be greatly missed."

Mr Brewster said the club will now hold a special event in memory of Mr Mathers, but that dates have yet to be finalised.

Tributes have been posted on the Mail's Facebook page.

Chanel Almeida wrote: "Rest in peace Stu.

"You are missed by a lot of people and you didn't realise how popular and how many people's hearts you touched.

"I am going to miss the best doorman in town. Keep safe up there matey."

Chantelle Acey posted: "Tears come to my eyes.

"Stuart was a top bloke and a true gentleman. There is not a bad word to say about him. It is so sad and I still cannot believe it.

"Everybody looked up to you. You were always there, especially looking after the ladies to make sure they were okay on their night out.

"Nobody will ever take your place, Stu. Rest in peace."

Stuart also worked at Don Dixon Butchers in Holderness Road, east Hull.

He had lived in Kingswood for about two years.
