Our daily blog with the latest news, transfer rumours and gossip about Hull City in the Premier League. June 13: Curtis Davies, Harry Maguire and Nikica Jelavic.King Curtis to land bumper deal All the talk of signing Joleon Lescott and Harry Maguire might have some supporters fearing the end is nigh for captain Curtis Davies, but Hull City have no intention of cashing in on their Player of the Season. Following the lead of the Mail yesterday, the Sun reports that Davies is to be offered a bumper new deal of £30,000 per week to scare off the vultures circling this summer. Premier League rivals Newcastle, Sunderland and Everton are all said to have an interest in landing Davies ahead of the new season but a new and improved deal would nip all that in the bud. The Sun add that Steve Bruce wants Lescott to be Davies' partner next season, a formidable pairing that would surely delight City fans.
Harry Maguire heading to East Yorkshire? Sheffield United's Harry Maguire is a player firmly in Hull City's sights and the Sheffield Star reports that Wolverhampton Wanderers are to be knocked out of the race for his signature. The Star shares our opinion that City are preparing to make a formal bid and reports how Bruce dispatched his scouts on several occasions to watch Maguire last season. The Express and Star, based in Wolverhampton, also concedes that Wolves have little hope of landing the highly-rated defender with City on the scene. They report City's "Premier League status and wages are expected to lure the 21-year-old to Humberside rather than the West Midlands, despite his vastly reduced chances of regular football there." Until now, Wolves have led the chase for Maguire this summer, failing with bids of £1m and £1.5m.
Jelavic earns respect in World Cup opener An estimated audience of 350m people tuned in to watch the opening game of the World Cup last night and Hull City striker Nikica Jelavic was in the thick of the action. Although he could not become the first Tiger to score at a World Cup finals in Croatia's unfortunate 3-1 defeat to Brazil, he at least earned the respect of the English media in Sao Paulo. Jeremy Wilson of the Daily Telegraph wrote how Jelavic "led the line with strength and purpose", while Matt Lawton of the Daily Mail observed how he "battled well as the lone striker" for Croatia. It could, of course, have been a dreamy night for Jelavic. His scuffed shot from Ivica Olic's cross saw the City man miss a golden chance to become the star of the show, but at least it did not prove costly as Brazil defender Marcelo turned the stray shot into his own net. And that miss was not overlooked in post-mortem. Lawton added that he "probably should have done better with the finish that ended up bouncing in off Marcelo." Wilson said Jelavic "missed (his) attempted shot completely in the build-up to Croatia's fortuitous opener" and that he "lacked the pace to fully exploit the obvious weaknesses in Brazil's defence." Both writers handed Jelavic a 6 in their player ratings, as did Miguel Delaney of the Independent. He wrote Jelavic "had an unintentional part in the goal, and caused Brazil enough problems."
