A DISUSED riverside building in Hull is being transformed into a club night venue. Martin Hodgson and Robert Fletcher have invested thousands of pounds in creating Gate Nº5, which will open on Saturday, June 21.
The duo are the team behind the successful Different Language parties held in the city.
Mr Hodgson said: "Different Language has always felt a responsibility to help push boundaries in Hull, the recently crowned UK City of Culture 2017.
"Gate Nº5 is an exciting, intimate music and creative space hidden amid an industrial estate, against a backdrop of warehouses, chimneys and factories.
"This disused wharf building, sat on the banks of the River Hull, was formerly used to export linseed oil to the Middle East."
Mr Fletcher, a plumber, and Mr Hodgson, a web designer, have been holding house and techno nights for seven years.
Mr Hodgson said: "We started off on bank holidays with an outdoor party at Lamp and moved to Spring Bank Tavern. We then moved to Fruit, where we have been for three years. The next step was to get our own dedicated space.
"The Different Language night normally sells out and I think the key to the success is that it is something a bit different.
"The parties are held in good venues and we get a great crowd who have stuck by us."
The support seems to have continued, with tickets sold out for the opening night with Tobi Neumann, Rossko, Different Language and Bourge.
Mr Hodgson said: "Everybody is excited about the new venue.
"We were driving around the area and found Gate Nº5 quite quickly.
"There will be one main indoor room and a large outdoor space once it is all complete."
Although the initial plan is to host the Different Language parties there, Mr Hodgson hopes to increase the number of events in the future.
"The capacity is for about 400 people," he said.
"The long-term plan is to turn it into a fully licensed creative space, which will hopefully play a part in the City of Culture events. It could be used for arts and photo shoots.
"It will have a similar feel to Fruit. It will be very raw, with brick walls and a low ceiling.
"There will be a nice intimate feel."
