Richard Noble's 1,000mph Bloodhound car 'can inspire a generation'

Land speed record-breaker Richard Noble has told guests at the Yorkshire International Business Convention in Bridlington about his determination to inspire youngsters with a 1,000mph car. The Bloodhound SSC project would smash a previous record set by Mr Noble's team in 1997, which reached 763mph. It is part of a project to inspire the next generation of engineers. Speaking to 700 delegates at the convention, Mr Noble said: "Back in the day we were absolutely brilliant in building planes and it inspired a generation. Now we have the BBC to inspire kids in baking and sewing. "We are currently working with 6,000 British schools, so students are learning about the Bloodhound project in schools and we believe it can inspire the next generation of engineers." Mr Noble achieved massive success with his Thrust SSC project. When he broke the land speed record, his website became the fifth most-visited in the world. He said it was vital Britain reclaimed its engineering heritage. Mr Noble said: "National debt is at £1.4 trillion. We are in debt and we are in it in a big way. The only way we can get out of debt is through our manufacturing and export sectors, of which manufacturing contributes a disgraceful 11 per cent of GDP. "The key for the future and to get us out of debt is to inspire."
