A ROOFTOP gig and club night is being launched at one of Hull's popular nightspots on Friday, showcasing music from the region. DJ Andrew Coe, known as Andyoyo, has organised the event, which launches with performances from Breeze, The Madisons and the debut gig from Babies.
The event starts at 10pm and will finish at 4am.
Following the initial event, the plan is to hold the #FirstFriday night on the first Friday of the month.
Andy said: "We are going to be UK City of Culture and I think people need to support local talent and local promoters.
"The aim of events like this is to offer something a bit different on a night out and to also make the city culturally exciting.
"The rooftop gig is something a bit different for the city and it's being launched with three strong bands."
The idea came when Andy used to run the Time For Heroes indie night at the George Street nightclub.
He said: "Everyone was out on the terrace and I had the idea of bands playing on the rooftop.
"I just hope the weather is good, as the plan is to have the bands playing outside."
For band Babies, who will be the first musicians to open up the night, it will mark their first gig since forming in February.
For vocalist and guitarist Ryan Smith and drummer Sam Mackereth, it marks a return to performing live after their previous band, The Tennents, called it a day.
The pair are joined by bassist Joe Vickers.
Ryan said: "It's really exciting, but being the frontman after being a rhythm guitarist is a bit daunting.
"We're really chuffed to bits to be asked to play at the gig by Andy, especially with the people we're playing with.
"We came together in February. It was originally just going to be me and Sam, but that was going to be a bit more of a chal- lenge, so we brought in Joe.
"I've had some stuff written for a few years that was never used."
The band already have future gigs lined up in Bath, Manchester, London and will be playing at Hull's Adelphi on August 7.
"After our first release, 2048, we have had a few record labels getting in touch," Ryan said.
"The feedback we've been getting so far has been great and it's been really good how fast it has all been going."
As well as the gig, there will also be a club night with DJ Priya, Andyoyo, Danny Hull and Jamie Arnell spinning some alternative songs. There will also be a barbecue.
Tickets cost £5, or £4 if you get on the bands' guest list.
Rooftop gigs became popular after the Beatles performed on the roof of the Apple recording company in London in 1969. Others who have taken to the roof include U2 who performed an impromptu gig on a liquor store in Los Angeles in 1987. In 2011 the Red Hot Chili Peppers give a free concert from a rooftop in Venice Beach and in 2012 Blur recorded a concert at a secret rooftop location in London.![]()
