A MAN who injured his leg while cleaning his barbecue was shot by police with a Taser after he turned on the paramedic who was sent to help him.

Paramedic David Addison was sent to Dean Park's home in Hucknall Garth, Bransholme, just before 2pm on Sunday, February 2, after the man's partner called to say he had hurt his leg.

But Mr Addison ended up locking himself in his ambulance and fearing for his life when Mr Park went berserk with a meat cleaver.

After Mr Addison wrapped a bandage around the injury, he decided Mr Park needed to go to hospital, but his patient suddenly collapsed and he put a face mask on him in a bid to revive him.

Mr Park came round, removed the mask, and became "very aggressive", Helen Wheatley, prosecuting, told Hull Crown Court.

Mr Addison called for back-up when Mr Park brought a meat cleaver from the kitchen and began to remove the bandage with it.

He then began waving the weapon around while walking towards Mr Addison and his colleagues, who fled through the back door, leaving medical equipment and a defibrillator behind.

They locked themselves in the ambulance and waited for police to arrive, hearing "banging and smashing" sounds from inside the property as they did so.

Park then emerged from the house with the defibrillator, which he proceeded to smash against the outside of the ambulance.

Police had been called by Mr Park's partner and, when a female officer, PC Stephanie Lawson, arrived, she was confronted by Mr Park in the street.

He shouted at her: "Don't ******* come near me, that's close enough. I'm not going down easily, I'll tell you that now."

Other officers were called to the scene and PC Lawson decided the safest way to arrest Park was to use her Taser, an electronic stun gun, which she had to fire twice before Park "co-operated".

He was arrested but could barely recall the incident when questioned.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mr Addison said: "At the time, I was very frightened and feared I was going to be seriously injured.

"I've never been frightened to this extent before. I'm now nervous about attending other jobs, especially when I'm single-crew."

The court heard Park had eight previous convictions for 15 offences, including public order and criminal damage offences.

Joanna Golding, defending, said he had a "torrid history", including a traumatic childhood, and had suffered a life-changing motorcycle accident at the age of 20.

He met his partner 20 years ago and set up a business, which initially did "extremely well," Miss Golding said.

But when it failed, he began a "downward spiral" and became depressed.

Miss Golding said he was not a risk if he did not mix prescribed medication with alcohol.

Park, who admitted affray and criminal damage, received an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

He must also comply with a two-year supervision order.
