It looks like Robert Koren will be leaving Hull City at the end of the season, and although it's unfortunate it doesn't come as a huge surprise to me.
Since Nikica Jelavic and Shane Long were brought in during the January transfer window, I've not seen Koren fight enough to earn his spot back.
He knows he has not been a first choice and, for me, he's resigned himself to that fact in his body language. Maybe he knew about his future mid-season, who knows?
Take nothing away from the Slovenian, though, because he became a firm fans' favourite when he arrived at the KC Stadium four years ago.
He worked wonders during the club's Championship days and became a main fixture in the Tigers squad. He was almost the first name on the team-sheet for some time.
But City cannot afford to let sentiment take over when they should look to strengthen the side.
For me, Koren's future lies in the division below. A number of Championship clubs are known to be keen on him, and he will fit in there for a couple more seasons.
If Tom Huddlestone, David Meyler or Jake Livermore had suffered an injury, Koren could've stepped up to the mark no problem. However, it's not fallen the right way for him this season and I'm afraid sometimes you have to bite the bullet and accept there are more talented players within the squad.
Steve Bruce will have his plans set in stone for next season already. Although I don't think he'll go mad with new signings, I'm sure some will be thanked for their services and shown the door. Not everybody can be kept on, and that's one of the most difficult parts of the job.
I'm sure Koren will still receive a fantastic reception tomorrow and remain in fans' memories for a long time. Good luck to him.
