Too much water could sink New Year's Day duck race in Driffield

DRIFFIELD: The New Year's Day duck race in the town could be cancelled if there is more heavy rain.

As it stands, the race may be moved to a section that is shallower but a further deluge could make the event unsafe.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, which runs the race, says high water levels in the beck are causing organisers to look at alternative venues.

The event consists of three races involving individually numbered plastic ducks.

The winner will get £30, runner-up £20 and third place £10.

David Woodmansey, race organiser, said: "If there is much more heavy rain then we may have to cancel.

"But as it stands, there is a stretch which is at welly height just further down. This means the road bridge that is currently the finishing point would become the starting line."

Ironically, the race was cancelled last year due to lack of water.

Mr Woodmansey said: "Even if we change venues, we will still use Cattle Market Car Park on the day and we will be there to give visitors directions."

For more information, call David Woodmansey on 01377 267694 after 6pm.
