Richard Whiting column: 'If we can't lift ourselves to face champions, we're in the wrong sport'

Hull FC star Richard Whiting says the players will respond to recent criticism as champions Wigan Warriors come to town

IT was disappointing to be left out of the squad for last weekend's game against Wakefield Wildcats and hopefully I can come back in this week and make an impact.

The consistency I have probably been known for in recent years has not been there this season and that's what I need to recapture.

I feel like I've been hit and miss in games, but also hit and miss between them at training too and I need to recapture that consistent level of form that will allow me to get my place back in the side and then keep it between now and the end of the season.

That's my aim this week and hopefully I can play against Wigan Warriors and this can be the start of a long run in the side.

Having the champions come to your home stadium is always an exciting challenge and it is one we will certainly be up for this week.

Lee Radford spoke to all the players at training this week and said he has every confidence we will be up for this game.

The challenge, Radders said, is to make sure we are at the same level for this game and every match after that.

When you've had a bad week like last week, if you cannot lift yourself to face the champions then you're in the wrong sport.

It's always good to test yourself against the best and that's the challenge for us with Wigan coming to the KC.

It's the first time we have played them since last season's Challenge Cup final and there has been a few changes to both our side and theirs since that game.

I'm aware they are missing some key players this week, but what Wigan can always be relied upon is having a long production line of talent and we'll need to play really well to get a win tomorrow night.

Curry and a quiz should provide belly laughs

MY testimonial events are coming thick and fast at the minute.

We had a great night after the game on Sunday at the New Griffin pub with a race night and some live music by The Bullets.

Some of the team were supposed to come along and join me but following the loss I told them to go home as I didn't feel it was right them being there.

We didn't need them anyway because it was a great night and one which I hope will be replicated on Monday when I'm having a curry and quiz night at Tapasya in Hull.

There will be some of the players at that event and anyone who wants to come along can take part in a question and answer session with the squad, as well as enjoy some food and laughs.

Kirk Yeaman had a similar evening for his testimonial which I went to and it was one of the best events.

It should be a relaxed atmosphere.

If you want to come along contact Andrew Pahlen on 07929454405.
