Hull Stingrays: Coach Omar Pacha searches for French connection

HULL Stingrays coach Omar Pacha says he's likely to return to the French player market after signing Zach Hervato.

A Canadian-Italian passport holder, Hervato spent last season with Neuilly-sur-Marne.

With Pacha – and new assistant coach Carl Lauzon – having played in France before joining Stingrays last summer, it is a set-up he knows well.

"Maybe there'll be a few more players arriving from France and a few from North America," said Pacha.

"I'm trying to get the best player I can get, whether that's from France, Russia, within our budget and for the roles I require."

Although Pacha was remaining tight-lipped, it is believed the Rapid Solicitors Stingrays are "fairly close" to signing a new netminder to replace Ben Bowns, who has joined Elite League rivals Cardiff.

A deal for a defenceman is understood to be nearing completion.

Despite the unrest surrounding owner Bobby McEwan's tenure at Stingrays, fuelled by adverse comments from two of last year's squad, Pacha said he has had no trouble attracting interest from potential recruits.

"I'm working really hard on recruitment in between my University studies," he said, before stressing he's in no rush to complete his squad before returning home next month.

"A lot of people want to come and play here, so it makes my job easier.

"Zach was one I wanted to get done early as he had the double passport.

"I think he'll be a guy who will be a very pleasant surprise for us, I'm really happy."
