Arsonists are being blamed for a fire that gutted an east Hull recycling plant and left more than 2,000 homes without power. A joint police and fire investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances which led to the blaze at Taylor's Environmental and Recycling Services Ltd, off Hedon Road. However, police say they are treating the fire as arson and are appealing for witnesses to come forward. A Humberside Police spokesman said: "The police and fire service are now treating the fire as arson and are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area of the Century Yard Ferndale Park Industrial Estate, between 10.30am and 12.30pm on Sunday, May 4, to ring the police. "Anyone with any information, which could help the police piece together how the fire started, is also encouraged to call in." Firefighters were called to the site, in Century Road, shortly before 1pm on Sunday, after receiving nearly 60 calls from residents and other businesses who reported thick, black, billowing smoke. It took nearly 24 hours to put out the fire. Fortunately no one was working at the plant at the time of the fire. Damage to the unit has been estimated at upwards of £20,000. Northern Powergrid said the fire damaged overhead power cables, resulting in the temporary loss of power to 2,262 homes. Anyone with information is asked to call Humberside Police on 101, quoting log number 310 of May 4.
