AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a footballer suffered a broken leg during a Sunday League match.
Police are investigating an allegation of assault during the men's Sunday League match between Fenners and AFC Biggin in Bransholme.
A player from the Biggin team has been accused of becoming aggressive after he was given a yellow card and police have been told he then made threats to injure another player.
Shortly after he was given the card, the same man was reported to have made a two-footed challenge on a Fenners player, resulting in the player suffering a broken leg.
Detective Sergeant Jason Gourley, from Hull's critical investigation team, said: "Any violent act reported to us, wherever it is committed, will be routinely and thoroughly investigated.
"A football field is no exception to that rule."
Despite the tackle taking place during a division one league game with 22 players on the pitch, the police are still appealing for witnesses.
DS Gourley said: "We are undertaking enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this case and appeal to witnesses to come forward if they are able to help."
The match took place at the Noddle Hill Youth Centre in Noddle Hill Way, Bransholme, between 11am and 11.30am on Sunday, December 16.
A police spokesman said witnesses were needed to outline the circumstances leading up to the player breaking his leg. Witnesses are to ascertain the identity of the man who is believed to have caused the other player's broken leg.
Wally Owst, secretary of the Hull Sunday Football League, said much work had been down to cut violence out of the game.
"As a league, we will help in any way possible," he said.
"We want to cut anything vicious out of the game.
"From what I've heard, it sounds serious. You don't get many injuries like this."
Mr Owst said the East Riding County FA, of which the Hull Sunday Football League is affiliated, would be involved in any disciplinary action in the wake of the police investigation.
He said: "We deal with things such as player registration.
"Between the police and the East Riding County FA, they will deal with this and take action.
The player suspected of deliberately injuring the Fenners player is described as a slim white man in his mid-20s, 5ft 9ins tall with dark blond or brown spiky hair.
No one from Fenners was available to comment and a spokesman from AFC Biggin refused to comment.
Anyone with any information about the trouble at the match is asked to contact Humberside Police on 101, quoting crime reference number 1948381 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
