STAFF and pupils at an East Riding school are celebrating after Ofsted ruled their primary is top of the class.

Mount Pleasant CE Junior School, Market Weighton, has been rated as "outstanding", following an inspection by the education watchdog.

Inspectors found the school was outstanding in all key areas – for achievement of pupils, quality of teaching, behaviour and safety of pupils, leadership and management and overall effectiveness.

Ofsted reported the school has rapidly improved since a previous inspection, when it was described as "satisfactory".

Headteacher Adrienne Palmer was delighted with the 248-pupil school's glowing report.

She said: "The fact that the outstanding judgment has been made in all of the areas inspected is an additional cause for celebration.

"The report is the result of much hard work and team effort by all of the staff at Mount Pleasant, including the support staff.

"I always believed the teachers were committed to doing the very best for the children and knew them to be hardworking and effective."

Mrs Palmer insisted pupils also deserved credit.

She said: "They represented the school with confidence, showing the caring aspect of the school we work to achieve.

"Some of the things they said about the school were amazing and showed they were really proud of it."

Mrs Palmer was praised by Ofsted for her leadership skills.

Lead inspector Barbara Martin said in the report: "The headteacher is an exceptional leader and has had a strong impact on improving the quality of teaching and raising standards of all pupils.

"She is ably supported by her well-established leaders and the highly committed governing body.

"There is a strong corporate approach to leadership. They are all highly ambitious for the school's future.

"All staff in the school work as a cohesive team to ensure that all children have the best education they can possibly have."

Ofsted found pupils made rapid progress as they moved through the school, that most of the teaching was outstanding and never less than consistently good.

Pupils enjoyed going to school and this was reflected in its high attendance figures. The new curriculum was described as "imaginative and creative".

To improve further, Ofsted said the school should maintain and improve further the already consistently outstanding achievement by:

Making sure pupils always act upon teachers' comments in their books to further improve their work.

Making better use of the outdoor space on the school site to enhance pupils' imaginative and creative learning further.
