A MAN was caught raping an unconscious teenage girl when police burst into his house as he was carrying out the attack.

Officers were called by the girl's distressed mother, who dialled 999 when she learned her daughter had been locked in a bedroom with the man and his friend.

Roman Smentek, 37, and his housemate Krzysztof Drozdz, 26, will be sentenced today after both admitted raping the 19-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Both men are expected to be given lengthy jail terms and then be deported to their native Poland.

The victim had her drink spiked on a night out and got a taxi home, but was accidently dropped off at her attackers' address nearby.

Her mother, who had been made aware the girl was in their flat by a concerned passer-by, could hear the men laughing and see one looking out of the curtains as she screamed her daughter's name from outside.

She called police and, when officers arrived, they burst in to find Smentek raping the girl.

Prosecutor Mark McKone told Hull Crown Court: "Police found the girl and Smentek in bed and she was asleep. Her head was on the pillow and she was not moving.

"He was asked by the police who the girl was and he shrugged his shoulders, saying he didn't know. It took some time for police to wake her and she was confused and distressed when awoken. Smentek smirked at police, as if he was proud of himself and was arrested."

Forensic tests suggested both men had raped her.

Mr McKone said the girl had fallen unconscious after her drink had been spiked on a night out at the Welly Club in Beverley Road, Hull.

She had got a taxi to her house – close to Smentek and Drozdz's – and they took her inside after she struggled to explain to the driver and concerned onlookers which house she lived at.

She incorrectly gave the men's house number and was taken there, where the door was answered by a Polish man.

Mr McKone said: "A man who was helping her suggested calling the police but the Polish man said, 'No police, it's OK. One hour, she fine.'

"She struggled to her feet but then fell into the garden. She was sick and was then carried by two men into the hallway.

"One of the men told a helper to leave but he remained because he was concerned for her."

Smentek came downstairs and spoke to the other Polish men in the house before carrying the girl upstairs with Drozdz. They went into a bedroom and locked the door behind them.

Mr McKone said: "The man who was helping phoned the girl's mum and knocked on the bedroom door. At first, they would not let him in but then Drozdz opened the door and said she was sleeping and he could go.

"He said he wanted to wait until help arrived for her. Smentek came out and was aggressive, saying, 'My house, leave now, you go'.

"He asked Drozdz why Smentek had locked the door and he shrugged his shoulders and said 'it's men', suggesting he knew he was having sex with her.

"When he went back into the bedroom, the man who was helping could see Smentek and the girl in the bed and Drozdz sitting on the same bed using his laptop."

The man who was trying to help was then ushered out of the house by Drozdz.

When the girl's mother arrived 30 minutes later, she could see a light on in the bedroom and hear the two Polish men laughing.

"She shouted her daughter's name and then saw one man looking out of the curtains," said Mr McKone.

"She then called 999."

The girl had suffered injuries to her hands, arms and legs after the attack in the early hours of March 2.

Smentek was arrested at the scene, while Drozdz was arrested at 11pm the same day.

Both men were due to stand trial at Hull Crown Court today, but changed their pleas to guilty at the last minute faced with overwhelming evidence.
